IPE put some questions to pension consultants across Europe. Here is some of what they had to say.

Investment restrictions were introduced on foreign currency exposures and hybrid financial products such as structured products and convertible bonds. Foreign bond managers have been diversified to reduce the weight of distressed sovereign debt. Diversification away from the euro and the US dollar in favour of a broader portfolio of currencies was also introduced.

Our manager selection is an ‘open-book’ process for the client, who can compare our propos¬als clearly with other options available on the market. Also, excluded managers can visit our offices to view the choices we have made and compare them with their own proposals. We exclude from mandates financial products where we are an investment adviser unless clients authorise us to use them: and they are always compared clearly with other market options. All these measures provide good governance and minimise the potential for conflicts of interest.(…)
